DIY Cirtus Infused Vinegar Cleaner

Vinegar is a powerhouse when it comes to cleaning. It’s acidity means it is able to cut through grime and other nasty build ups, as well as any pesky sticky residue, whether left behind by your toddler or by the label on a (soon-to-be-re-used) glass jar.

In addition to this it is nontoxic, chemical free, and eco-friendly, making it the ultimate multipurpose cleaning solution. And the best part – it’s super cheap. When looking at which type of vinegar to use, regular white vinegar is best. Most white vinegars are 5% acidity, whereas cleaning vinegar is 6%. This difference actually makes cleaning vinegar 20% more powerful, so use this when possible (although you can use regular vinegar, or even apple cider vinegar if this is what you have on hand). (NOTE – please don’t confuse this with industrial vinegar which is up to 20% acidity )

Whilst cleaning with plain vinegar would be perfectly OK, many are not a fan of that fairly pungent vinegar smell. To (at least partially) overcome this we suggest infusing your vinegar. This can include an array of herbs, fruit peels or essential oils. We have found this to be a great option to get the most use out of your citrus peels (and the odd full lemon doesn’t hurt either. )

How to make your DIY vinegar all purpose cleaner

Simply pour your vinegar into a clean glass container along with your citrus peels/lemons/essential oils (about 20 drops of oil to 1l vinegar – but this is entirely up to you. You can leave this out completely)

Be sure to over the glass with a wax wrap or cloth. If your glass has a metal lid do not put this back on whilst the vinegar infuses – it will deteriorate the lid.

Leave this to infuse for about 1 week.

Strain out any peels etc and fill a spray bottle with 1 part vinegar and 1 part water.

Your done!

Uses for your DIY vinegar cleaner:

  • ** DO NOT USE THIS ON MARBLE AND GRANITE COUNTER TOPS or any other stone surfaces. This is due to the high level of acidity in the vinegar.

You can use the cleaner for the following:

  •  Floors
  • Showers + Bath tubs
  • Toilets
  •  Glass
  • Dishwashers + Appliances
